The challenge

Flor de Caramelo isn't your average florist. Every arrangement can carry a personalized message, a name, a heartfelt note. The client wanted that personalization to be front and center during checkout — no friction, no third-party forms, just a clean field right on the product page.

Shopify doesn't offer flexible native product personalization fields out of the box. The answer was Line Item Properties — a Shopify Liquid feature that lets you attach custom data to each cart item without needing a third-party app.

Technical implementation

The base theme is Fiama FLAME-V2-0-0 by Tuna Theme, chosen for its performance and flexibility for Liquid customization. Gift message personalization was implemented directly in the product template:

<!-- Line Item Property for gift message -->
<input type="text" name="properties[Name]" placeholder="To: ...">
<textarea name="properties[Message]" placeholder="Your message..."></textarea>

The gift message snippet was implemented using render 'gift-message', positioned before the submit button to ensure the message always appears in checkout and in the order confirmation email.

What I learned

Shopify has clear strengths and real limits. The key to working well with it is knowing when to use native features, when to extend with Liquid, and when you actually need an app. For Flor de Caramelo, Line Item Properties was exactly the right call — lighter than any personalization app, more reliable long-term, and no added monthly cost.

The biggest takeaway was about emotional shopping experiences. A florist isn't selling flowers — they're selling the moment someone receives the arrangement. Every design decision — the message field, the checkout flow, the order confirmation — had to reinforce that feeling, not break it.
