The Local Pack — that block of three results with a map that appears in most local searches — is the most valuable digital asset for a business that depends on nearby customers. And the vast majority of businesses in the Dominican Republic have it misconfigured, incomplete, or simply unclaimed.
Why most DR profiles don't perform
The mistakes I see most often: wrong or overly generic category, empty or website-copied description with no local optimization, no hours defined, one or zero photos (profiles with photos receive up to 35% more clicks according to Google data), no reviews or reviews left unanswered, and the detail most people overlook: the NAP (name, address, phone number) being different from what's on the website — which confuses both customers and Google.
How to optimize your profile step by step
- Claim or create the profile Search your business on Google Maps. If it exists without you having created it, claim it before optimizing. If it doesn't exist, create it at business.google.com. Postcard verification in the DR can take 2 to 4 weeks.
- Choose the right primary category This is the most important decision — it determines which searches you appear for. Be specific: "Website designer" is better than "Technology company." You can add up to 9 secondary categories to cover more searches.
- Write a description optimized for local search 750 characters. Include your city (Santo Domingo, Santiago, La Romana), your main services, and your differentiator. Don't copy your website text — it's written for people, not search engines. Naturally include the phrases your clients type into Google.
- Complete contact info and hours Phone number, website, address or service area, actual hours including Dominican holidays. Google penalizes profiles with inconsistent or outdated information.
- Add real photos with descriptive names Minimum 10 photos: logo, photo of the professional or team, past work or premises. Name them descriptively before uploading ("dentist-santo-domingo-clinic.jpg" instead of "IMG_4823.jpg"). AI-generated or stock photos perform far worse than real ones.
- Set up services with descriptions and pricing Each service with a description and estimated price appears directly on the profile before the customer clicks. Include the city name in the service description where applicable.
- Activate your review strategy Reviews are the most important factor for the Local Pack. Send a personalized message to your last 5 to 10 satisfied clients with a direct link to leave a review. Respond to all reviews — Google measures owner engagement.
Weekly posts: the factor most businesses skip
Google Business lets you post updates, offers, and news directly to the profile. They appear in search results and on Maps. The vast majority of businesses in the Dominican Republic don't use this. One post per week — a service, a promotion, an update — keeps the profile active and visibly improves Maps ranking within 4 to 6 weeks.
How long to see results in the DR
With a well-optimized profile from scratch: Maps visibility for searches specific to your area within 1 to 2 weeks. For the Local Pack on more competitive keywords (like "lawyer Santo Domingo" or "restaurant Piantini"): 4 to 8 weeks of active work with posts and reviews. In cities outside the capital, competition is lower — results come faster.
Your Google Business profile doesn't replace your website — they complement each other. An active profile brings traffic to the site, and the site converts the visitor into a lead.
Frequently asked questions about Google Business in the Dominican Republic
How long does verification take in the Dominican Republic?
Verification by postcard takes 2 to 4 weeks. Some businesses qualify for video verification, which is faster. Once verified, the profile appears on Maps within 1 to 3 days.
Can a business without a physical address appear on Maps in the DR?
Yes. Configure the profile as a "Service area business" — you appear in local searches without exposing your personal address. You must clearly define the zones or cities where you provide the service.
How many reviews do I need to appear in the Local Pack?
There is no fixed minimum. In many local markets in the DR, 5 to 10 real reviews with an optimized profile is enough for the Local Pack in specific searches for your city and service niche.
